Best Free Experiences in Panama City

1. Visit the Mola Museum

If you’re in Panama City and need a serious pop of color in your life, then you have to swing by the Museo de la Mola (aka MuMo). The exhibits here are all about the “mola” textiles made by the indigenous Guna women, showing off their intricate designs and deep cultural history.

Molas are hand-stitched works of art, made using a reverse appliqué technique where multiple layers of fabric are sewn together and then carefully cut away to create intricate, colorful designs. Each piece tells a story, often inspired by nature, animals, or Guna traditions, and it’s not just about beauty—it’s a way for the Guna people to express their identity and preserve their culture. These textiles aren’t just worn as traditional clothing (you’ll often see Guna women rocking them as part of their daily attire), but they’ve also become beloved pieces of art worldwide.

2. Stroll Through Casco Viejo

Strolling through Casco Viejo is like stepping into the past—every street feels alive with history. This old quarter, built in 1673, is small enough to explore by foot, which makes it perfect for a laid-back day of sightseeing.

Between the iconic white towers of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the charm of Hat Street, It’s got that perfect blend of old-world charm and modern energy, where centuries-old churches sit right next to trendy cafés and rooftop bars with killer views of the skyline.

3. Get a Pic at La Calle De los Sombreros

La Calle De los Sombreros (aka: Hat Street) is hands down one of the coolest artsy spots in Casco Viejo! Find your way to Calle 1a Oeste, and then suddenly you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of colorful Panamanian hats hanging above you—it’s like walking through an art installation.

The playful vibe of those floating hats against the historic backdrop makes it impossible not to stop and snap a few pics. And to be honest, I couldn’t help but snap pictures every few steps! If an Insta-worthy photo is what you’re after, this is the place to get it.

Tip: Get there early so you have the street to yourself! I was the only one there at 8:30 on a Sunday morning.

4. See the Iglesia San Felipe Nativity Scene

Head over to the Parish of San Felipe de Neri, and prepare for a little surprise! While the church is already lovely, the real gem is hidden behind a wooden door in the back—a massive Nativity scene that almost stretches across the entire room.

Iglesia San Felipe Nativity Scene

This isn’t just your average holiday display. The detail in the miniature biblical villages is truly impressive.  The Nativity scene at Iglesia San Felipe has been around for over 60 years and has become a cherished part of Panama City’s holiday traditions. It was originally built by dedicated parishioners who wanted to create something truly special, and it’s been growing ever since.

5. Walk the Amador Causeway

If you’re looking for fresh air and awesome views, a walk along the Amador Causeway is a must! This stretch is almost 6 kilometers long, so whether you’re biking, scootering, or just strolling, the long stretch offers stunning views of the Panama City skyline on one side and the entrance to the canal on the other.

6. Hike Ancon Hill (Cerro Ancon)

If you’re like me and love a good skyline view, then a hike up Ancon Hill is a no-brainer. The peak stands at 653 feet, which is the city’s highest point—and that means that the view is absolutely worth the climb!

Oh, and don’t be surprised if you spot a toucan or you see a sloth chilling in the trees. And keep an ear out for the monkeys—they love to make an appearance!

Tips: The trailhead starts in Mi Pueblito which can be reached by Uber or Bus. The hike is about 4 ½ miles roundtrip, with a little incline, but it’s on a paved road. Eat See RV has a great guide for hiking Ancon Hill.

See? Fun can be free! Panama City is full of experiences that won’t cost you a cent, from the cool views on Ancon Hill to the charm of Casco Viejo’s streets. Who needs pricey tours when you can have your own budget-friendly adventure? So, keep your cash in your pocket, your camera at the ready, and get out there—Panama City is waiting.

Traveling Soon? Use my Favorite Resources for Booking Your Trip!

Book Your Flight
Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine, because it checks dozens of airlines so you can easily find the best fare deals. You can also select ‘cheapest month’ to find the lowest fares for your destination (I use this all the time!).

Book Your Accommodations
I use both Booking.com and Expedia for hotels, because each offers a couple different hotel choices and I like to compare the reviews on each one. If you have a group or are looking for more of a home atmosphere, head over to VRBO or AirBNB that has houses, apartments and even just a room for rent in every price range.

Book Your Rental Car
If love the freedom to explore like I do, driving from place to place is the best option! I always book with Discover Cars for the best prices and top brand options.

Book Some Fun Tours!
Viator and Get Your Guide are my go-to search engines for cool bucket list experiences! Each one can have different tours, so check both—why limit yourself, right?

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Travel can be unpredictable. Whether it’s a last-minute cancellation, an injury, or (ugh) theft, things happen. That’s why I recommend never leaving the country without travel insurance. Here are my faves: Safety Wing and World Nomads.

Get Packing & Travel Essentials Ready
Check out the Bucket List Journey Amazon Store to find all my favorite travel essentials. Everything from Packing cubes, to travel adapters and toiletry containers to walking shoes.

*Lastly, check travel.state.gov for visa requirements and safety information.
