Planning Tips for Visiting Bodega Bay
Best Time of Year to Go
The best time to visit Bodega Bay really depends on what you want to do. Of course summer brings the warmest, sunniest weather and is ideal for hiking, beach walks, kayaking, and other outdoor activities. But there’s a catch: Bodega Bay is a popular weekend escape from the Bay Area, so sunny summer weekends can get surprisingly crowded.
I’ve visited Bodega Bay in every season, including winter, and I’ll be honest: winter isn’t my favorite time to go. The weather is often foggy, chilly, and drizzly, which can put a bit of a damper on those gorgeous coastal views and outdoor plans.
For me, the sweet spot is late August through early October. You can still catch those beautiful sunny days and enjoy plenty of time outside, but the biggest summer crowds have started to thin out.
How Many Days to Spend in Bodega Bay
Bodega Bay is the kind of place where you can pop in for a quick escape or settle in for a longer stay. Sure, you could cover the must-see spots in a day (fresh seafood feast? Check. Scenic hike along Bodega Head? Double check), but you’d be missing out on so many hidden gems. If you can, carve out a weekend—two to three days is perfect. This gives you time to soak in the sunsets, savor wine at local vineyards, and maybe even spot some migrating whales without feeling rushed.

Getting Around
Getting around Bodega Bay is best done with a rental car. The area is spread-out, and having your own car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Where to Stay in Bodega Bay
The Lodge at Bodega Bay ($$$), my absolute favorite place to stay: This is my top pick for a Bodega Bay getaway, and it’s easy to see why. Set beside Doran Beach, The Lodge combines cozy rooms with fireplaces and bay views, fire pits, an outdoor hot tub and sauna, a spa, and on-site dining at Drake’s. I especially love that you can walk from the property to the beach and Bird Walk Coastal Access Trail, then come back for wine by the fire.

- The Inn at the Tides ($$), best for a central location: This waterfront hotel is conveniently located near Bodega Bay’s restaurants, shops, and harbor, making it an easy home base for exploring the area.
- Sonoma Coast Villa ($$), best for a quiet retreat: Located a little inland from Bodega Bay, this intimate country inn feels worlds away from the busier coastal spots. It’s especially popular with couples looking for peaceful surroundings, cozy rooms, gardens, and a more secluded getaway.
- Hotel Dega ($$), best for a simple, budget-friendly stay: If you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring rather than lounging at your hotel, this is a practical choice. It offers comfortable accommodations in a convenient location.
What to Do in Bodega Bay (Top 5 Things to Do)
Hike On A Coastal Trail
One of the most popular coastal trails is the Bodega Head Trail, a 1.67-mile (2.7 km) trail that takes you around the iconic Bodega Head peninsula, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Another great trail is the Pinnacle Gulch Coastal Access Trail, which goes through a gulch that leads to a beach at the bottom.
Go Wine Tasting
Just because you’re on the coast, doesn’t mean you can’t do a little wine tasting. Start your vino adventure at Sonoma Coast Vineyards, where the cool coastal climate creates ideal conditions for producing some great wines.
For a truly immersive experience, make your way to Fort Ross Vineyards, located on the hills of Fort Ross State Historic Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This family-owned winery specializes in cool-climate wines, including their acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Visit a Filming Location of Hitchcock’s “The Birds” at Potter Schoolhouse
Pay homage to a piece of cinematic history by visiting the iconic filming locations of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” in Bodega Bay and the surrounding area.
One of the most memorable filming locations is the Potter Schoolhouse, situated inland in the town of Bodega. However, it is now a private residence, so you can only admire it from the outside. Adjacent to the schoolhouse, you’ll find another significant site from the film, the St. Teresa of Avila Church.
Enjoy the Beach
You can’t really go to Bodega Bay without hitting up one of the beaches, and there are plenty to choose from! Here are my top picks:
- Doran Beach, A family-friendly favorite known for wide sandy shores, calm waters, kayaking, picnicking, kite flying, and easy beach walks.
- Goat Rock Beach, Famous for its dramatic sea stack, rugged scenery, harbor seals, and excellent opportunities for wildlife watching and photography.
- Schoolhouse Beach, A quieter coastal spot popular with anglers for surf and rock fishing, plus scenic shoreline exploring at low tide.
- Salmon Creek, A broad sandy beach known for fishing, beach-combing, dunes, and the picturesque creek flowing into the Pacific.This is the one I’ve been to the most because of it’s easy access and free parking.
Buy Treats at Patrick’s of Bodega Bay Salt Water Taffy
Don’t miss stepping into the recognizable pink and white shop of Patrick’s, where a variety of handmade saltwater taffy will satisfy your sweet cravings. From classic flavors like vanilla (my favorite!) and watermelon to enticing mixed taffy packs such as the Dessert Mix and Berries and Cream, there’s a taffy for every taste.

Fishetarian Fish Market
This spot is hands-down my favorite casual go-to whenever I’m in Bodega Bay. From their perfectly crispy fish & chips and creamy clam chowder to the oh-so-delicious shrimp tacos, every bite is a win. The best part? They’re all about sustainable sourcing, so you can enjoy your meal without a shred of eco-guilt. It’s a laid-back place with mostly outdoor seating where you can grab a quick bite while soaking up the salty sea breeze.
Rocker Oysterfeller’s
If Southern comfort food meets coastal seafood sounds like your vibe, then Rocker Oysterfeller’s is a must-visit. While they’re famous for their oysters Rockefeller (obviously!), it was their clam chowder that was my favorite. It’s rich without being overly creamy and served with a side of warm, garlicky bread that’s perfect for dipping—pure comfort on a cool Bodega Bay day.

If you’re craving a more upscale dining experience in Bodega Bay, Drakes Sonoma Coast at The Lodge at Bodega Bay is the place to be. The Lodge was just voted the #1 hotel in the world by Condé Nast Traveler, so you know you’re in for something special. Their farm-to-table approach means you’ll be indulging in fresh, local seafood that’s been elevated to perfection.
