As soon as I started mentioning to people that I was traveling to Seattle, they all immediately asked the same thing, “Are you going to catch a fish at Pikes?” Uh, it’s on the bucket list, so I certainly hope so. But, after that, all the questions were related to eating the fresh seafood. Mostly, suggestions on where to find the best clam chowder in Seattle.
By the second day in town, my only dining experience had consisted of eating duck gizzards and beef tongue at Marche. It was about time to dig into this world renowned, best clam chowder everyone speaks of.
The award winning Pike Place Chowder is only a half minute walk from the market. You’ll wish it was even closer.
I was nervous about my pending chowder experience for a couple of reasons.
#1 – I make a mean clam chowder. Please excuse the arrogance.
#2 – I am just 40 minutes from the famous San Francisco Fishermans Wharf. Chowder in a sourdough bowl is their specialty. They kind of know what they are doing.
We walked into this tiny, 5ish table shop and had a selection of eight chowders to choose from.
I opted for the Traditional New England Clam, since it was the closest to my recipe. Peter ordered the Smoked Salmon.
They were served steaming hot right at the counter, to order, and came with a large hunk of moist bread. Perfect for dipping. Of course, you can grab a bag of typical oyster crackers if you so choose.
My pride will keep me from saying that this chowder was better than mine, but it was the best clam chowder in Seattle. So tasty that I had to practically sprint to purchase another cup just before heading to the airport.

Opps..could I say that I've never had a chowder! But you make me wanna to taste it, so back to the States I'l have it, definitely!
Gasp! It is delicious!
I wonder how they do the vegan chowder
I wish I would have tried it! But, it says they make the vegan chowder with fresh veggies, coconut & lime juice.
I'm an East-Coast purist when it comes to my seafood. Anything West of Cape Cod simply is not up to par–though I've only truly been to the West Coast once! The best clam chowder I ever had was at a place called The News on Martha's Vineyard. No idea if it's still there. A close second is a place that I thiiink is called Union Oyster House in Boston, near Quincy Market. Expensive, but so so worth it. I suppose as much as I want to get the hell out of MA, I'll always be a New England girl at heart… at least when it comes to seafood!
If my travels ever lead me to the East Cost (which I’m sure they will at some point) I will definitely try the clam chowder there. I bet it is amazing!
