I have vivid memory of watching Sesame Street as a child when they toured a crayon factory. Ever since then I have been fascinated by the huge production machines that could enhance my coloring experience and produce other useful products. It’s amazing how they can create these “robots” to perfectly slice, roll, label, bake and portion. With no crayon factories in Sonoma County, I opted to tour an Olive Oil factory instead. Not a bad option!
McEvoy Ranch is an organic Olive Tree orchard that sprawls over 550 acres in Petaluma, California. They are known to produce some of the best Tuscan-style olive oil in the area. Just before the holidays they had a free open house where you were able to taste their oil, walk the land, tour the production areas and purchase the products.
Unfortunately, it was one of the coldest days in the area, so most of the time at the olive oil factory my hands were numb and teeth were chattering.
I have taken note for next year…bring hot coffee (with Baileys), wear mittens, scarf and double-up the long johns! Though freezing, it was fantastic to walk through their gorgeous orchards and then follow the olives through the process of becoming tasty olive oil.
