Magnificent Seven – Bucket List Wonders of Latin America

Latin America has long been a favorite place for travelers seeking some adventure. There are heaps of ancient treasures and natural wonders. Here are seven of the best in this part of the world that you simply have to visit.

Iguassu Falls in Brazil
Rodrigo Soldon

Iguassu Falls, Brazil

Spanning the borders across Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay is this spectacular collection of 275 waterfalls. Covering two miles of the Iguassu River, it puts Niagara Falls to shame at four times the width. It remains a popular tourist destination, known as one of the best falls in the world. There are also flights available to several bordering towns. This makes accessibility easy and you can also explore a neighboring national park.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
Szymon Kochanski

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

At over 4,000 square miles, this is the largest salt flat in the world. From the months of January to March, a small amount of water covers the entire surface creating a unique illusion. As the sky reflects of the surface, it can seem like you’re walking amongst the clouds. Although it’s far from any major cities, there are some comfortable accommodation options, including luxury hotels made entirely of salt blocks.

Atacama Desert, Chile
Terry Feuerborn

Atacama Desert, Chile

Known as the world’s driest desert, it’s believed that you can feel the moisture leaving your body when hiking in this region. Located just west of the Andes, this desert covers an expanse of 40,000 square miles. You’ll also find volcanoes, hot springs and alien-like salt formations rising through the dirt.

blue-footed booby bird in Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Lying 600 miles of the coast of Ecuador is this volcanic archipelago teeming with wildlife. Many of the plant and animal species here cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. This inspired Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. Flying into Ecuador’s capital, Quito is the easiest way to plan your Galapagos adventure with many operators providing island hopping tours.

Chichen Itza, Mexico
Joaquin Moreno

Chichen Itza, Mexico

One of Mexico’s most spectacular sites, Chichen Itza is situated in the peninsular of Yucatan. The ancient ruins of this Mayan civilization have many archaeological wonders, such as the iconic pyramid El Castillo. In 2007, this was elected as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds and midday heat.

Eagle Beach, Aruba
Chris Ford

Eagle Beach, Aruba

This picture postcard beach is the widest in Aruba and famed for its sands and Caribbean waters. But it’s much more than a sun worshipper’s paradise. In July, four species of turtles including the Loggerhead and Leatherback, hatch on this beach. At sunset, visitors can watch the hatchlings make their way to the ocean.

Torres del Paine, Chile
John Spooner

Torres del Paine, Chile

From snowcapped mountains to dense forests and spectacular glaciers, this national park has it all. Fans of the outdoors will love a trek through the region of Patagonia. You can also mountain climb with some peaks reaching a staggering 9,000 ft. This diverse landscape is best enjoyed on a guided tour.

Latin America is home to some of the best wonders in the world. This is just a small fraction of what you can expect when traveling in the region. Now it’s time to book that trip and explore it for yourself!

Sign. Me. Up! 🙂 The salt flats look awesome.

    Just made me think:
Isn’t it crazy how different the views of some people may be? I mean, this short list is awesome. I want to see them all, however, to some (probably western people) would say “what the hell am I going to DO in a salt-field?”

I think that’s how us travelers differ – partially. To me, it’s not about DOING something in the salt-field…it’s about the fact that I am seeing it with my own eyes, understanding that nature has created it over the course of possibly millions of years, and also (and possibly the most important) the enjoying the journey I have been able to experience along the way…

I agree with you about wanting to see it with my own eyes, it’s definitely different than just seeing a photograph.
